Dry well near the Njord field in the Norwegian Sea

The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) reports that Lundin Norway AS, operator of production licence 830, is in the process of concluding the drilling of wildcat well 6307/1-1 S.

The well has been drilled about 40 kilometres south of the Njord field and about 95 kilometres north of Kristiansund, Norway.

The primary exploration target for the well was to investigate the reservoir properties and the petroleum potential in Permian carbonate rocks (equivalent to the Wegner Halvø formation in the Upper Permian at East Greenland). The secondary exploration target was to collect data for potential reservoirs in the Middle to Lower Jurassic (the Fangst and Båt groups).

The well did not encounter reservoir rocks in the primary exploration target. The Tofte formation, approx. 60 metres, was encountered in the secondary exploration target. Effective reservoir rocks amounted to 35 metres of sandstone, mainly with good reservoir quality. The formation is aquiferous.

Extensive data acquisition and sampling have been carried out.

This is the first exploration well in production licence 830. The licence was awarded in APA 2015.

Well 6307/1-1 S was drilled to a vertical depth of 3,771 metres 4,089 metres measured depth below the sea surface, and it was terminated in rocks of currently unknown age.

Water depth is 237 metres. The well will now be permanently plugged and abandoned.

Well 6307/1-1 S was drilled by the Leiv Eiriksson drilling rig, which will now drill wildcat well 7121/1-2 S in production licence 767 in the Barents Sea, where Lundin Norway AS is the operator.
