During this year’s Nor-Shipping, KONGSBERG presented its latest offering to support the industry’s evolution to digitalisation: Vessel Insight.

Building on more than 40 years of experience as a system integrator and developing management information systems for the maritime sector, KONGSBERG’s Vessel Insight offers operators a tool to apply digital solutions that will enable increasing the value gained from the data that they’re collecting.

Vessel Insight offers users a cost-effective means to capture and aggregate their assets’ data, which is then securely transferred to the cloud. Once the data is collected, the Kognifai Marketplace provides access to a large range of applications and services to process the data, thus increasing value. This further enables higher returns from investments in digital solutions, whether they are developed by KONGSBERG, by operators or by third parties.

Enabling digitalisation
Hege Skryseth, President of Kongsberg Digital, says “Connectivity and edge-type solutions are happening across heavy-asset industries.”

“Yes, we have been working with some quite advanced customers,” adds Egil Haugsdal, President of Kongsberg Maritime. “Operators are very focused on efficiency, and we have been working to provide digitalisation as a tool to improve the efficiency of their operations. For example, on the LNG side we have many advanced customers who are actively working to take advantage of the benefits offered by digitalisation.”

On the hardware side, Vessel Insight boasts a small, edge computer that can be easily installed by an operator. Skryseth explains, “It’s both to accommodate the computing power on the edge side onboard the vessel – specific information in real-time for the vessel operators – and then to transfer those data that would be used for applications or analysis onboard or onshore. Applications will be built on a ‘container’ basis, which means that the same application can be used on the edge and in the cloud.”

“I think what’s important – and what we’ve spent the most time developing – is to get it as plug-and-play as possible. It’s plug-and-play, and still cost-efficient,” Skryseth continues.

Application marketplace
While much depends on how applications are used, Hege Skryseth foresees that operators will experience significant cost savings via implementing Vessel Insight. “We do see an opportunity when it comes to fuel, for instance, to reduce some 10 to 15%, and then vessel maintenance is another opportunity – so cost-savings could range from between 10 and 20%,” Skryseth says.

“What we really want to do here is to get the marketplace filled with different types of vendors within the maritime industry – including the start-ups – all joining the system with their application suites,” Skryseth continues. “So, we’ve been mapping the software landscape and how that has evolved over the last year, and what we’ve seen is that last year approximately 150 applications were available – and now it’s 450. We saw that the digital software landscape is really growing rapidly, but in order to get the advantage of the use of applications operators need the structured and contextualised data, so this is what we are bringing to the table.”

“The system is based upon open standards, and throughout the whole chain of development, our focus has been on security and cost efficiency. And for Kognifai and Vessel Insight, when it comes to development, our strategy has been that whatever technology the cloud platform vendors are developing, we provide a place for it within our system to make it cost-efficient,” Skryseth adds.

Secure and easy
While accessing sufficient amounts of quality data has historically been a challenge in terms of cost, Vessel Insight provides a cost-effective, secure solution to help operators take advantage of the value of their data.

“Combining deep domain knowledge with digital expertise has enabled us to create a solution that truly can accelerate the adoption of digital solutions in the maritime sector,” says Egil Haugsdal. “So, what we have now is a solution that’s easy to install, easy to configure, and, I would say, is at a competitive cost level – so it’s affordable for everyone. And I think this could be a door opener – shipowners should make Vessel Insight a part of their future and experience the benefits.”
