EIT InnoEnergy, the European innovation engine for sustainable energy supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, has launched its Masters course in Energy Storage. The comprehensive course will deliver the skills needed to support Europe’s transition to a cleaner energy future.

Demand for battery technology is expected to grow rapidly – with Europe on track to increase its battery production capacity 20-fold in the next 7 years. Part of this growth will be delivered through the European Battery Alliance – where EIT InnoEnergy is a key partner – which is designed to deliver collaboration across the value chain to accelerate European battery development. This could create more than 100,000 jobs every year from 2020. With this significant increase in battery deployment planned, EIT InnoEnergy has developed the course to ensure the sector has a robust future talent pipeline.

From construction managers to field service engineers, new roles will require skilled individuals with the technical understanding to deliver new innovations. The programme touches upon different aspects of energy storage such as batteries, chemicals, bio fuels and electric-vehicles as well as entrepreneurial and business skills giving students a complete picture of the storage landscape.

Ideal for engineering students or individuals with a sound understanding of the energy system, the course is open for applications until June 10. Taught at leading universities in Portugal, the Netherlands and Finland, students will learn from industry experts in this new and evolving field including Annukka Santasalo-Aarnio, Assistant Professor, Aalto University.

Frank Gielen, Education Director for EIT InnoEnergy comments, “The European Battery Alliance is a catalyst for growth of storage technology across the value chain and this new course ensures there are the skills to match this ambition. We’ve made the most comprehensive course in Europe to guarantee our students will be leading the race for top positions in the industry.”
