The International Energy Agency (IEA) has released the Energy Technology RD&D budget free dataset with data up to 2019 – a unique data collection which gathers data from direct submissions from national administrations.
In 2019, the estimated total public energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D) budget for IEA member countries increased by 4% reaching USD 20.9 billion. This was the third consecutive year of increase after 4 years of decrease.
Public spending in low‐carbon energy technologies RD&D significantly increased to reach USD 19.7 billion representing the 94% of total budgets. Spending for non‐low‐carbon energy technologies, instead, stabilised to the 2018 levels just above USD 1 billion.
