In the week leading up to COP26, IMarEST and ITN Productions have co-produced Resilient Ocean, a short programme highlighting the importance of preserving the future health and resilience of our ocean resources through scientific advances. The marine world is faced with some of the biggest challenges of our time from mitigating climate change to maintaining the world’s food supply and security.
Anchored by ITN Productions presenter Marverine Cole from the ITN Productions London studio, Resilient Ocean hears from experts within the sector, focusing on ocean health and addressing global issues, encouraging new people into the industry and exploring the technologies and automation evolving the sector.
Professor Stephen de Mora, an oceanographer and the IMarEST’s first Ambassador for the Ocean Decade, and Marine Biologist Stephanie Lavelle join the programme to discuss the high-level environmental events and initiatives in 2021 including COP26 in Glasgow and the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, helping to steer the focus back towards ocean health after the pandemic. In a special film, IMarEST demonstrate their dedication to supporting organisations, academic establishments and individuals through a shared commitment to professional values that unites those working with the ocean.
With 90% of the world’s good transported by ship, Resilient Ocean features a heartfelt film by BIMCO calling on governments to step up and support the 1.6 million seafarers who support us all in our daily lives facilitating the passage of cargo, keeping the world and its economy running.
Reporter Rory Challands interviews experts from the Corporation of Trinity House which plays an essential role in safeguarding seafarers and sustaining our shores by providing safe navigation channels for ships to sail through in some of the busiest shipping waters in the world. We learn about their rigorous training which ensures that world-class seamanship helps prevent environmental and navigational disasters at sea.
In a film featuring Plymouth Marine Laboratory part of the FAST cluster – a group of organisations from across science, academia, industry and government – explain how advanced technologies in areas such as robotics and autonomy can open up new ways to monitor and make the most of the marine environment.
The International Maritime Organisation’s goal to legislatively reduce emissions from global shipping is the key driver behind the development of numerous new marine fuels. Marine pollution contaminates our oceans, destroys marine ecosystems and puts marine life at risk. VPS is the largest bunker fuel testing and advisory company for ship operators in the world, working to make the marine industry more sustainable. Reporter Sue Saville visits VPS’s laboratory in Rotterdam to learn more about their bespoke testing methods serving 200 ports worldwide.

Combining key sector interviews, informative news items and sponsored editorial profiles from leading organisations filmed in studio and remotely on location, the programme will form part of an extensive communications campaign featuring IMarEST members and professional partners.
