The Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy has announced a new area for CO2 storage in the North Sea. The announcement comes due to interest from the industry and is in accordance with CO2 storage regulations.

“Several companies express interest for licences under the carbon storage regulations, and new storage locations are vital. Carbon capture and storage cuts emissions and creates employment, and we want the Norwegian Continental Shelf to be the leading province for CO2 storage,” says Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Terje Aasland.

The announcement is a result of inquiries from a company that seeks a specific storage area in in the North Sea.

The application deadline is set for 1 June 2022 at 12:00.

The full announcement text, updated map, coordinates, and further information is available on the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate’s (NPD) website.
